Analgesic duration and latency of dexamethasone and fentanyl in supraclavicular block

Abstract

Objective: To describe the duration of analgesia and onset times observed with the use of dexamethasone and fentanyl in ultrasound-guided supraclavicular block at Hospital Obrero Nº 5. Methodology: Prospective, longitudinal, and descriptive study. A sample of 55 patients (18–60 years old) undergoing upper limb surgery was analyzed, divided into two groups: Group  A  (dexamethasone  8  mg)  and  Group  B  (fentanyl  100  mcg). Results: In the observed cases, the dexamethasone group showed an analgesic duration of up to 15 hours, while the fentanyl group reached a maximum of 10 hours. In the dexamethasone group, 50.9% of patients experienced analgesia lasting more than 12 hours. The observed onset time was 10–15 minutes with dexamethasone and 15–20 minutes with fentanyl. Conclusions: The use of dexamethasone was associated with longer postoperative analgesia periods and shorter onset times in the studied sample.
